Aideen Barry RHA

Multimedia

Aideen Barry is a conceptual artist based in Ireland with an international, multifaceted practice spanning filmmaking, performance, experimental lens-based media, drawing, and sculpture. Her work employs visual trickery to create a heightened suspension of reality, often exploring themes of sinister systems.

Barry’s recent projects are intersectional and collaborative, engaging with an array of artists and creatives including Peter Gabriel, William Kentridge, The Centre of the Less Good Idea (Johannesburg), Inuit throat singer ᕇᑦ Riit, composers Irene Buckley, Tshegofatso Moeng, and Philip Miller, choreographers Junk Ensemble, fashion designer Richard Malone, Tropical Popical and Margaret O’Connor, among others. Her practice transcends traditional boundaries by working with diverse collaborators such as pop singers, archivists, historians, scientists, and activists, producing large-scale, interventionist artworks.

A notable achievement in Barry’s career is her collaboration with nearly a thousand Lithuanian citizens to create the feature film *Klostės*, now part of the National Collection at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and contributing to Kaunas receiving UNESCO World Heritage status. Her works function as Brechtian hammers, democratising access to visual culture and inviting audiences and stakeholders to co-author the creative process.

Significant projects and exhibitions include the Bangkok Art Biennial (curated by Dr Apinan Poshyananda), FORMAT International Festival of Photography (UK), solo exhibitions at IMMA (Ireland), Salzburg Kunstverein (Austria), Oakville Galleries (Canada), Welt Museum (Vienna), Matucana 100 (Chile), CAC Malaga (Spain), The Headlands Center for the Arts (USA), Centre for the Less Good Idea (South Africa), NASA Kennedy Space Center (USA), Skaftfell (Iceland), Banff Centre (Canada), Centre Culturel Irlandais (France), alongside numerous others.

Barry has also featured in prominent international art fairs and galleries including Galleri Image (Denmark), Zona Maco (Chile), The Katzen Center at the American Museum (USA), Wexner Center (USA), Elephant West (UK), Moderna Museet (Sweden), Musée des Beaux-Arts Lyon (France), Louise T.
