Alice Maher RHA

Multimedia

Alice Maher’s work touches on a wide range of subjects often reprising, challenging and expanding mythic and vernacular narratives in her multi-media practice. Her artistic language spans painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, animation and film. She is well known for her large immersive installations, as well as her lifelong devotion to the practice of drawing. The various art works and materials lend themselves to lateral, associative or enigmatic display, aided by her very particular attention to setting and social context.

Her first major solo show was at the Douglas Hyde Gallery Dublin in 1994. That same year she represented Ireland at the Sao Paolo Biennale. In 2012 the Irish Museum of Modern Art presented a retrospective of the artists 30 year practice. ‘Becoming’ included many iconic works as well as a newly commissioned film, ‘Cassandra’s Necklace’. She has made many collaborations with colleagues in other disciplines such as theatre and dance.

Her work can be seen in many international collections including The Neuberger Museum, The Hammond Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MOMA, the British Museum and the Georges Pompidou Centre Paris, as well as the Arts Councils of Ireland North and South, The Irish Museum of Modern Art, The Crawford Gallery, The Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery and the Ulster Museum.  She is a member of Aosdána since 1996 and received an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Art from the National University in 2013. She is represented by Kevin Kavanagh Gallery Dublin, Purdy Hicks Gallery London and David Nolan Gallery New York.
