A three-day masterclass led by Sian Costello in applying the lessons from an art-historical master to painting from the live model. Attendees will work from reproductions of paintings by Édouard Manet in both black and white and colour, and apply that technical knowledge to crafting their own portrait from a live model. With a mix of class demonstrations and one-to-one tutoring, students will learn how to prepare a palette, create an underpainting, work tonally, and block in colour.
This class is targeted towards those with basic experience in painting and drawing who would like to develop their skills of observation, colour mixing, and painting from life.
Artist Bio:
Sian Costello (b. 1998) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Limerick City, Ireland. Since graduating from Fine Art Painting in LSAD in 2020, Costello has exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently with her solo show Baby Obey Me at Modern Animals, Zurich, and the group show girls, girls, girls at Lismore Castle Arts, curated by Simone Rocha. Her work has been profiled in The Guardian, The Art Newspaper, British Vogue, Another Magazine, The Visual Artist’s Newsletter, and The Irish Arts Review. She is the recipient of the Art’s Council of Ireland’ Visual Arts Bursary Award (2023) and is currently preparing work for two upcoming solo shows in 2024 at PS2, Belfast, and at Ormston House, Limerick.

There will be a waived fee for all attendees in this masterclass under a competitive process.
