This weekend course will equip the participant with the knowledge and skills to create their own silicone moulds for fine art and craft applications.

This weekend course will equip the participant with the knowledge and skills to create their own silicone moulds for fine art and craft applications. Applications for these silicone moulds can include sculpture editions, slip casting moulds, sacrificial wax models for bronze casting, encasing objects in epoxy, sugar craft and chocolate and ice cube moulds.

Techniques and materials which will be covered will include pouring silicone moulds, box building for moulds, keying techniques, life casting with alginate, jesmonite, epoxy, dump moulds and two part moulds.

Artist Bio:

Stephen Murphy is a Cork born artist who lives and works in Limerick City. His art practice spans the mediums of drawing, painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture, and he has exhibited at venues nationally and internationally including the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Royal Academy and the British National Portrait Gallery. He is an advocate for high edition number, low price sculptural editions, which he makes through a process of maquettes and silicone moulds.

Most recently he was awarded the 2023, RCSI Art Award at the 193rd RHA Open Annual Exhibition for his sculpture “Newborn”.

Alongside his art practice, he is also an educator who has been described as “inspiring” by the UK’s “Good Schools Guide” and lectures on subjects including Fine Art, Design and Education at Third Level.
