“… nothing without a woman.” features the work of Hannah Breslin IADT*, Sarah Jayne Booth CCAD*, Fiona Carey NCAD*, Niamh Davis CCAD, Genieve Figgis NCAD and Emma Turpin NCAD.
Continuing the Ashford Gallery’s outreach programme of supporting very recent emerging artists, the 2007 Recent Graduate Exhibition is the fifth of it’s kind. Mark St John Ellis, curator of the exhibition, is eager to point out that: “ It is not a selection process of ‘ the best of ‘ and because of this reason curatorial decisions are made to put the exhibition together. From viewing the graduate shows an idea may come forward that links the various students’ work. It could come from a perceived attitude of the artists that unites the work, or a single piece could inspire the creation of a group exhibition.”
“All of the artists in “… nothing without a woman.” express something personal, and in some cases, intensely personal. The artists in this project are all women and whilst the work itself is not gender based, the exhibition does question certain aspects of an historical, once male dominated field. I would suggest that there are areas in this work that make the male viewer more uncomfortable than the female by challenging that male gaze.”
