Plane is the fourth exhibition in a series of “artist curated” exhibitions programmed by Patrick Murphy at Dublin’s Royal Hibernian Academy.
Plane presents a number of exciting young Irish based artists whose practices, while various in form and sensibility, are consistent in that they each prioritize innate levels of engagement with materials both physically and metaphorically. The artists work with a broad variety of materials and concerns; the majority of these are manifested as sculpture and installation. The works employ traditional mediums such as stone, paint, and wood and re-appropriate a wide variety of non-art materials such as reel-to-reel tapes plastic bottles. What will become most apparent with this show are the levels of skill used by all of the artists.
The curator recognizes a number of somewhat oblique relationships between the concerns of his artistic practice and the artists he has chosen to present in this exhibition.
Plane also reflects the curator’s passion for, and interest in, music by including a 10” vinyl recording that will accompany the exhibition catalogue. The recording is by A=apple, a band that the curator, Karl Burke and Nina Hynes formed a number of years ago. For this recording the band collaborated with the American cellist Kim Poricelli and Percussionist Pete Pamf.
Mark Garry, the curator of Plane, is an artist, curator and writer based in Dublin. Mark was one of the artists chosen to represent Ireland in last year’s Venice Biennial and he is currently exhibiting work at gallery 2 in the Douglas Hyde Gallery.
