This exhibition was the final in the third series of Futures, a sequence of exhibitions that endeavoured to document and contextualise the work of early career artists and emergent practices, around who exists a growing critical and curatorial consensus. The artists chosen for this Futures exhibition were Anishta Chooramun, Jane Fogarty, Celina Muldoon, Sven Sandberg, Mary Sullivan and Harry Walsh Foreman, marking the end of this series, pausing the process for programming developments.
An important part of the selection and research for this exhibition is the studio visit. As a staff, we estimate that we do a minimum of 100 studio visits a year, to artists at all stages of their careers, with varied practices and outcomes. These visits are so important on a number of levels; they allow for research primarily, to interrogate and question, to learn (always learning) and to communicate and reach out in a meaningful way to the broad and open community of artists on the island. The outcome is varied, perhaps it’s a mid-process visit, prior to the exhibition, or a first communication that starts a working relationship. More often the outcome is less defined, advice is always asked and given, introductions to other curatorial practices made, work discussed and considered. It’s been a number of months since I’ve been on a studio visit and it’s a part of the role that I miss. A lot. Post Covid world will complicate this process, travel more challenging and the need to distance physically or the hellish zoom meet. We’ll find a way and I am looking forward to seeing some new work in the near future. See you soon.

The artists in Futures, Series 3, Episode 3 are selected from various artist-led initiatives, group shows and over a series of studio visits undertaken in the last 12 months by Patrick T. Murphy, RHA Director and Ruth Carroll, Curator.
