In Rara Avis, Bennie Reilly presents us with an assortment of winged creatures, exploiting the rhythms, patterns and the chaos of their displays, sometimes to the extent that they become unrecognisable as nature. More so than in any of Reilly’s past works, the paintings in Rara Avis are a visual puzzle. By being playful and varied with technique and application; providing an economy for the images to unfold and for inviting imagination to mingle with the visual oddities already present in nature, the artist’s intention can be seen as the production of paintings that are as peculiar as their inspirations, yet singular in their workings.
