This workshop is suited to artists who are interested in developing a research process that draws on their body’s presence in the world.

Our perception of the world is formed not just through visual observation, but also by the wider range of sensations that we experience as we move through it.

This workshop is suited to artists who are interested in developing a research process that draws on their body’s presence in the world. It is also suited to artists who are interested in expanding their approaches to drawing and representation.

The workshop will involve drawing, walking, and a presentation and discussion of the work of artists who use walking as a research method.

Using drawing processes ranging from gesture drawing and abstract mark-making, to mapping, diagramming, and observational drawing, we will explore ways of developing ideas and artworks based on walking.

To accommodate all levels of fitness and mobility, the act of walking will be interpreted broadly and imaginatively, from the aimless meander about the galleries, to a focused power walk around Merrion Square. Please dress appropriately!

Basic materials for the workshop include a notebook for ideas, newsprint for drawing exercises, good quality drawing paper for the development of ideas, a range of drawing media including ink and brush, pens, pencils, charcoal, erasers, masking tape or drawing board clips. During the workshop, we will interpret the process of drawing broadly. If there are additional materials that you would like to experiment with, do bring them along.

Participants can also bring any gadgets that they use to gather biometric, geographical information or sensory experience (fitness watches, phone apps, recording devices.) If you do use any of these gadgets, you might want to bring a laptop to review images, audio, visualisations, maps etc.

Please note this additional equipment is entirely optional – your body, paper and pencil will be entirely sufficient.

Artist Bio:

Róisín’s work is a response to journeys she makes through the landscape. For several years, she has focused mainly on drawing. Recently, she has been exploring ways of expanding her practice, by integrating printmaking and sculptural processes, indigenous building techniques and approaches to textile construction. Her practice is currently supported by Arts Council of Ireland Professional Development and Agility Awards.

Her work has been exhibited in Ireland and abroad, most recently at Assab One, Milan and Atelier des Empreintes, Pays de la Loire. Her next solo exhibition will be in the Custom House Gallery, Westport in 2023.

Róisín has been awarded several residencies to develop her practice. These include RHA Clare Island Residency 2022,  Anni and Josef Albers Foundation residencies in Connecticut and Senegal, IMMA Artists Work Programme, and West Cork Arts Centre Artists’ Residency programme.
