In this taster-class for hyper-realism techniques, students will learn the intricacies of detail-oriented, surface sculpting and simple, silicone mould-making. On the first day, participants will work on a 10x10cm tile of oil-based clay, creating a relief sculpture, focusing on organic textures such as directional pores, wrinkles, goosebumps, scars and more. The following day, when the sculpted tile is finished, we will make a 1-part, silicone block mould of the work, which can be used for future casting in a material of your choice. Points of dialogue throughout the class will be focused on materials, tools, resources, sculpting textures and a run-down of mould-making mediums and processes.
*The take-home object from this workshop will be the mould itself, as opposed to the sculpted tile.
Bio
Sadhbh Mowlds is a Dublin based sculptor with a background in glassmaking that regularly informs her practice. She received her bachelor from the National College of Art and Design, Ireland, in 2014 and spent the following five years in Germany. There, she worked as a glassblower and instructor for Berlin Glassworks until relocating to the States where she received her Master of Fine Art from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, USA (2022). Following this, she worked on Murano, Venice, as a mould-maker with Berengo Studio, though has recently settled back in Ireland as a studio resident in the RHA.
Mowlds’ recent residencies include STARworks (NC, USA, 2023) and WheatonArts (NJ, USA, 2023). She has participated in numerous international exhibitions, regularly showing throughout Europe and the USA. Selected awards include the R.C Lewis-Crosby Award – RDS Visual Arts Awards, Arts Council Agility Award and the Saxe Emerging Artist Award. Her work is included in the permanent collections of Kunstsammlungen der Coburg, Germany and the Museum of American Glass, NJ, USA.
