You are invited to a screening of Maïa Nunes’ Lake Burst short film accompanied by a live performance of the original soundtrack by Maïa Nunes on vocals with Brendan Jenkinson on clarinet.
The screening will be followed by a conversation between Nunes and artist Alice Rekab. Bringing these two distinctive artists into conversation will reveal how their practices explore similar themes and resonate with each other, thus contextualising and offering deeper insight into Nunes’ exhibition and wider practice. This short film, included in Nunes’ current Lake Burst exhibition at RHA, is part of a series of artworks responding to Lough Bré and exploring the geo-mythology of Irish lakes as sites of healing, symbols of death and rebirth, and portals to the Otherworld and subconscious realms.

Maïa Nunes is an Irish-Trinidadian interdisciplinary artist whose artwork weaves with voice, cloth, movement, sound and the land to create multi-textural audio, music, sculptural installations, videos and live performances. Hers is a liberation practice; a live and ongoing process of re-membering the self in dialogue with the ancestral past. It unravels and re-imagines, using an integrative approach to usher in transformation and healing.
Alice Rekab is a visual artist based in Dublin. Their practice is concerned with expressions and iterations of complex personal and cultural narratives. They take their own mixed-race Irish identity as a starting point from which to explore experiences of race, place and belonging. Their work centres processes of collaboration and interdisciplinary exchange from which they develop film, performance, print, text, and sculpture—creating new intersectional objects for gallery based exhibition and large scale public art commission. They completed a PhD in Art at the Kingston School of Art, London in 2018 and an MA at Goldsmiths College in 2010. In 2020 they were the recipient of a 3 Year Studio Membership at Temple Bar Gallery+Studios. In 2021 they were awarded the Visual Arts Project Award
