As part of her debut solo exhibition Lake Burst at RHA, multidisciplinary artist Maïa Nunes has published her first album by the same name as a double vinyl. The Lake Burst album emerged out of the same artistic engagement with Lough Bré that inspired the wider exhibition and offers a sonic survey map of the mountain-lake landscape and the artistic response to it. The album arc is that of a journey of descent, from the lake shore, into the depths, and back out again. Featuring lush guitar, double bass, woodwind and drums that, together with Maïa’s distinctive vocals, create an intimate and mysterious sound-world. A musical exploration of deep geological time and ancestral healing.
During this event, Nunes will play a selection of songs from the album on vinyl record, and audiences will be invited to engage in a communal listening practice. This will be punctuated by a conversation between the artist and Anthony Kelly of Farpoint Recordings, the independent Irish record label that published Nunes album, dedicated to championing works that explore the edges where composition, improvisation, sound art and audio-visual practice meet.
A combination of listening through the album with the artist, interwoven with conversation between herself and the record label that published it, will offer insight into the music-making process and the wider Lake Burst project.
