The RHA is delighted to confirm that the inaugural Clare Island Studio Residency 2021 has been awarded to Hannah Fitz. This two-month artist residency will be made available, government restrictions allowing.
Clare Island is located 3.5 miles off the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland and the ferry crossing from Roonagh Pier takes approximately 25 minutes. With approximately 160 permanent residents, a vibrant community offers a host of amenities and activities including a cafe, two bars, a food store and post office, walking, hiking, bike hire, yoga, archaeological sites, fishing and a beach. A Community Centre and Heritage Centre are also located on the island.
This residency, through the generosity of a private benefactor, includes the exclusive use of the house and a separate studio at a nominal cost of €250 per month to cover utilities.
Hannah Fitz
Hannah Fitz will take part in the inaugural Clare Island Residency to research a new body of work. Fitz could be best described as a figurative sculptor, making sets of recognisable objects for exhibitions. The artworks appear strange in relation to the words we might use to describe them and instead seem bound together by having falling out of line.
Fitz’s recent solo projects include How I Finally Lost My Heart, at L21 Gallery Mallorca (2020), OK, at Kerlin Gallery, Dublin, (2019), and Knock Knock, at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Dublin, (2018). Group shows include, Double Estate, Pearse Museum, Dublin, (2020), L’Esprit, Portikus, Frankfurt, Germany (2020), BLUE, Arts Council Collection, Garter Lane, Waterford, (2020) and DISRUPTORS, Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, and Tail and Heads, Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania (both in 2019).
