Curator, Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts

The mission of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts (RHA Gallery) is to foster the vital relationship between artists and the public in the enjoyment of visual art and in the support of those who make it. The RHA is based at 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2.

The RHA are seeking a Curator to join their curatorial team which consists of the Director, the RHA Registrar, the Learning and Public Engagement Curator and RHA’s Head Technician.

The individual will act as a support to the exhibition, public engagement and collection programmes of the Academy working closely with the team members. The candidate should have a deep appreciation of contemporary art and a sound knowledge of artists working nationally and internationally. Exhibition organising, good administrative skills and budgetary control experience is required. The individual should be well-organised and capable of working with a wide range of stakeholders.

This is a full-time position and will be offered as a fixed temporary 18-month contract at an annual salary commensurate with experience.

 Duties Include:

  • Curator for the Ashford Gallery Programme – working with the Academy Member Committee for selection and programming
  • Work with and assist the Director on the Exhibitions Programme
  • Support the wider Curatorial Team including the Director, RHA Registrar, Learning & Public Engagement Curator and Head Technician
  • Exhibition research, labelling, text proofing
  • Commissioning new work
  • Studio visits with artists
  • Report to the RHA Programme Board, Council and Assembly
  • Conduct exhibition tours and talks – working with the Learning & Public Engagement Curator
  • Manage Ashford Gallery sales
  • Manage Annual Exhibition sales
  • Provide administrative support to the RHA Registrar for the Annual Exhibition

The successful candidate will have:

  • A third-level qualification in curating, art history, visual arts, project management or a similar discipline
  • At least five years work experience in a similar position
  • Deep familiarity with contemporary Irish art and its international context
  • Strong administrative skills coupled with an ability to organise and prioritise multiple tasks with excellent attention to detail
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving with good decision-making capability
  • A proven ability to deliver a professional service in response to queries
  • Good interpersonal skills together with an ability to maintain positive relationships
  • Proficiency in IT skills including MS Office and databases
  • Familiarity with online sales platforms such as Art Logic
  • Previous experience in sales management
  • An ability to work independently and on own initiative whilst being part of a wider team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A positive and professional manner when working in the Gallery and the ability to deliver an effective service

Terms & Conditions:

  • This position will be based in the RHA offices, 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2
  • The post holder will be expected to work a 35-hour week and will be willing to undertake evening and weekend work as necessitated
  • Hybrid working by arrangement
  • Office hours are 10am to 5pm, one hour lunch break
