Dorothy Smith ARHA

The President and Members of the Academy are delighted to announce the election of Dorothy Smith as an Associate Member of the Academy.

Dorothy Smith was elected at the RHA Assembly meeting held on Tuesday, 8 February, 2021. Her practice involves studio based work and publicly engaged projects with a particular emphasis on drawing.

Dorothy is a visual artist whose practice is concerned with the built environments in which people live and work and in particular the construction and lived experience of public space.

Recent exhibitions and projects include; solo exhibitions, Land Marks, RHA Ashford Gallery and Made and Considered in darc space, Dublin; An Post commemorative stamp commission honouring Andrew Carnegie founder of Carnegie Public Libraries; curation of exhibitions Print Works and Orientation for Droichead Arts Centre; Arts Council funded; Dalymount – Mapping a unique Architectural Space and Spatial Stories, an Exploration of Young People’s Everyday Experience of Public Space (with researcher Jackie Bourke).

Dorothy has worked with community based organisations, national cultural institutions and others as a manager, facilitator and teacher. She is a founding member of the campaigning group Phizzfest Reimagining Phibsborough and is a member of the Blackchurch Print Studio. She exhibits widely in solo and group exhibitions and her work is in public and private collections. Dorothy has been awarded the Taylor Bequest and RHA AXA Drawing Prize. She holds an MA in Visual Arts Practices from IADT Dún Laoghaire, a Degree in Painting from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin and a post Graduate Diploma in Art Management from UCD.
