Clare Island Studio Residency

As part of the RHA Studios programme, we are delighted to offer the two-month Clare Island Studio Residency through the generosity of a private benefactor.

Founded in 2021, the award offers an applicant artist a two-month residency on Clare Island in a house with a separate studio.

There is a nominal cost of €250 per month to cover utilities. The house and studio have WiFi and underfloor heating. The studio is not suitable for sculptors. Interested applicants should fill out the application form (link below).

Clare Island is located 3.5 miles off the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland and the ferry crossing from Roonagh Pier takes approximately 25 minutes. With approximately 160 permanent residents, a vibrant community offers a host of amenities and activities including a cafe, two bars, a food store and post office, walking, hiking, bike hire, yoga, archaeological sites, fishing and a beach. A Community Centre and Heritage Centre are also located on the island.

We are delighted to formally announce that artist, Róisín Lewis has been awarded this year's residency.

Her work is a response to journeys she has made through the landscape. Lewis works mainly with drawing processes. While the work she exhibits usually comprise of works on paper, over the past few years she has been exploring ways of expanding her drawing practice, by integrating printmaking and sculptural processes, indigenous building techniques and approaches to textile construction.

Artist Hannah Fitz was the first artist to be awarded this residency in 2021. You can read more about this in our News.

Applications are now closed for 2022.
