Graham Crowley

15 Oct, 2009 - 22 Nov, 2009

The West of Ireland landscape has had a lasting impression on Crowley since he began to visit the area and discover his family ties, in his late teens. Over the years he has “wanted to reflect its transformation from the rural to the suburban.
During this time there has been a resurgence in landscape painting. It has regained critical and academic approval, on the condition that it is eerie or abject. These strategies
are attempts to avoid the ‘picturesque’, which is regarded as romantic and rhetorical. I embrace the picturesque for these very reasons.
I regard my painting as synthetic and figuration as reflection (like fiction). The subject of my paintings is shadow and reflection. These ‘elements’, although intangible, are visually ubiquitous.”
