Landscape and ecological change are at the centre of these new works by Kurt Oppermann, showing in the RHA Ashford Gallery. The landscape is re arranged, altered, and manoeuvred as to facilitate function, efficiency and aesthetic.
While the paintings depict no clear or identifiable place they articulate a system of processes that can perhaps be felt or recognised. These landscapes continually attempt to reach a pictorial balance by any means necessary, combining areas of flatness and depth, rough spontaneous handling is offset against sharp representational elements. Underlying motifs throughout the paintings reference bar charts, graphs and financial indexes. This two dimensional abstract visual language opens a dialogue between historical representations of space and depth and the expanding need to condense content and information.
