28 Jan, 2023 - 30 Jan, 2023

This workshop will cover a wide range of technical and intuitive processes involved with encaustic painting.

Applications are now closed.

This workshop will cover a wide range of technical and intuitive processes involved with encaustic paint: surface preparation; in-depth additive and subtractive techniques and tools; opacity and translucency and compatible drawing media. Over the 3 days, the elements of time, layers and history will be explored to build toward complexity in painting.

There will be plenty of painting time with a balance of demonstrations, discussion, presentations and one-to-one support. Equipment and health & safety will also be reviewed. This class functions well for a variety of levels of experience. The workshop is supported by R&F Handmade Paints.

The workshop will deepen student’s conversation with the materiality of this paint and fine- tune personal visual language. Creative exercises and experimentation will expand vision and approach. Participants will explore advanced techniques (with fusing, scraping, use of translucency) involved in controlling what can seem, at times, a rather uncontrollable paint medium. Design and colour theory fundamentals will be reviewed throughout.
